On-Behalf Signature

The new ‘On-Behalf Signatures’ feature allows you to add signers that will sign on behalf of someone else. You or the on-behalf signer can select the signature text.

The ‘On-Behalf Signatures’ feature is disabled by default. Here is how you can enable it in a standard Secured Signing account:

  1. Go to My Account > My Settings.
  2. Scroll down to the On-Behalf Signatures setting and toggle it to On.
  3. Scroll back up and click Update My Settings.

Here is how to enable ‘On-Behalf Signatures’ in the enterprise portal:

  1. Go to Settings > My Account Settings.
  2. Scroll down to the On-Behalf Signatures setting and click the checkbox.
  3. Scroll down and click Save.

Once ‘On-Behalf Signatures’ is enabled, you can add one of these signatures in We Sign by clicking On-Behalf Signatures in the ‘Add Invitee’ dropdown menu.

In the pop-up that displays:

  1. For ‘On-Behalf Signer Type’ you can select either POA or General. Select POA if the on-behalf signer is an attorney, or General for other scenarios. General will also include the on-behalf signer’s signature, as well as the signature text, while POA only includes the signature text.
  2. Enter the email address and name of the on-behalf signer.
  3. Enter the name of the principal (the person that the on-behalf signer is signing on behalf of).
  4. Finally, click Add.

You can also add an on-behalf signer in the Add Clients / Notary page in the RON wizard:

  1. Add a normal signer by clicking Add Signer and entering their details.
  2. Click Add On-Behalf Signer Principal.
  3. Enter the principal’s name, select which signer you would like to sign on-behalf of this principal, and select the ‘On-Behalf Signer Type’.

Then you can continue to document tagging.

Once you have added the on-behalf signature to the document, you can place it and you can also change the ‘On-Behalf Signer Type’ in the ‘Settings’ dropdown, and select the default signature text. Note that the signer will be able to select different signature text when they are signing.

Once you have added the on-behalf signature to the document, you can select the default signature text.

Two Types of On-Behalf Signatures

General On-Behalf Signing

Choose General when someone is authorised to sign on another person’s behalf outside of a Power of Attorney arrangement.

In this option:

The signer’s electronic signature is included.

Signature wording clearly identifies both the principal and the authorised signer.

The signer chooses their preferred signature text and font during signing.

Examples include:

  • Signed on behalf of David Principal, John Smith
  • For and on behalf of: David Principal By: John Smith
  • Signed for: David Principal By: John Smith, acting on their behalf
On-Behalf Signatures Power of Attorney (POA)

Power of Attorney (POA)

Choose POA when the signer is acting under a legally recognised Power of Attorney.

The signature displays text indicating that the signer is acting as the Attorney-in-Fact, without displaying a handwritten signature image.

Examples include:

  • Principal by John Smith, Attorney-in-Fact
  • Principal by John Smith, Attorneys under POA
  • John Smith, Attorney-in-Fact for Principal

This option is ideal for legal, financial, healthcare, and property transactions where Power of Attorney authority must be clearly represented.
