Montana now stands among 13 states that actively allow online or remote notary services. This change took place during the 2019 legislative session with the passage of House Bill 370, spearheaded by Rep. Becky Beard, R-Elliston. The bill, which received overwhelming support, passed the House with a 69-29 vote and sailed through the Senate with a unanimous 49-0 vote. As a result, the law came into effect on October 1, 2019, empowering notaries in Montana to perform remote or online notarizations using audiovisual communication tools like Zoom and approved third-party notary platforms.
Montana’s population has grown by 11% over the past decade, driving the increased popularity of remote online notarization (RON). Residents and businesses alike have turned to this convenient and legally supported method for notarizing documents, bypassing the need for in-person appointments. Montana law fully supports RON, with the Secretary of State providing detailed guidelines for remote document verification.
To successfully complete a RON transaction, a signer and a notary public must participate. The notary public verifies the authenticity of the documents and applies a notary seal. Through the use of advanced communication technology, the RON process becomes accessible and straightforward. Montana’s commissioned notaries are trained in credential analysis, ensuring that all notarized documents are securely processed and fully compliant.
In addition to serving individuals, RON proves invaluable across various industries in Montana. Whether you’re in banking, real estate, law, contracting, or even government, RON offers a streamlined, efficient solution for notarization needs. Banks, credit unions, title companies, lawyers, contractors, real estate agents, and the military, along with most federal, state, and local governments, have embraced remote notarization for its convenience and effectiveness.
